It's not just chefs who like working with the freshest ingredients. The Emerson's brewers couldn't wait to get their hands on the latest crop of fresh Motueka hops from the greenthumbs at Garston Hop Farm. After harvesting, they're rushed from farm to brewery, and straight into the kettle. The extra-fresh cones give the XPA an extra-lively lemon and lime flavour, with background notes of tropical fruit, and a lovely hop oil texture. You're sure to give it a double green thumbs up.

With more road cones than people in NZ, we thought why not throw some in a brew? Not the orange plastic ones, but the whole cone Nelson Sauvin variety to release their hop oils. Big-hitting Sauvignon notes are layered on a background of Guava and soft bitterness produced by Kohatu. This juicy ale sits on a bready cookie-like base with an oily, candied hop decadence.

Out hop-spotting together in Motueka, Boneface and Liberty tripped over a hidden field of Riwaka missed by the official harvest. The aromas from the ultra-ripe cones blew the boys' minds so they wasted no time in lifting the lot. With Mike going Hazy and Joe heading Pilsner, the Longshot project was born, determined to make the most of the funky overstayers before they succumbed to rot and ruin.
